REVIEW

"How to Live on Earth" is a unique film that effortlessly crosses over several genres, including romance, thriller and sci-fi. Yeun-woo, a vulnerable husband and sensitive poet, wakes up every morning feeling eerily unsettled about his everyday life. As he starts to ponder existential questions and his love for his wife, he has a chance meeting with charming girl--Se-a is her name--with whom he can communicate telepathically and who, as it turns out, is an extra terrestrial.

Challenged and seduced by Se-a into leaving the earth, Yeun-woo is thrown into troubling confusion by veiled people and chaotic memories of his past. Meanwhile, Hae-rin, a wife who is financially the head of a family, works as a national undercover agent, and dishonestly marries Yeun-woo in order to watch him. She makes a shocking discovery when her boss--with whom she is having an extramarital affair and who has been surprisingly communicating with the aliens--gives her an order to assassinate Se-a.

The story portrays metaphorically the ennui of long-married couples and their doubts about the endurance of their love. The film also raises question about who or what is responsible for extramarital affairs--whether they are due to physical attraction or to the boredom of life.
